Why LEGOs Belong in STEM (and Skilled Trades) Education


When kids snap together those tiny bricks, they’re doing something deceptively complex. They're planning, measuring, problem-solving, and learning how things fit together—skills that show up in the work of electricians, plumbers, machinists, and countless other trades. Here’s the reality: STEM isn’t just white lab coats and computers. It’s the “how” behind every skilled trade. Electricians need to understand circuits and physics. HVAC technicians work with mechanical systems and airflow. Welders rely on geometry and chemistry. The earlier we expose students to these ideas, the more likely they are to see themselves in these careers down the road. For after-school programs, LEGOs are a low-cost, high-reward way to make technical learning fun and accessible. You don’t need a fancy robotics lab to get started. What matters is giving kids the chance to build, break, and rebuild—and to talk about how these small projects connect to the real world.


Promoting Awareness: Skilled Trades are STEM, Too


There’s a stubborn myth that STEM is only for people headed to college, or that skilled trades are somehow “less than.” That couldn’t be further from the truth. Skilled tradespeople are problem solvers and innovators, using math, science, and technology every day. By connecting LEGOs to real careers—inviting local tradespeople to talk about their jobs, or showing videos of bridges, engines, and buildings in action—we can help kids see the paths that are open to them.
